STARS of the Week–Jenny and Allen

Jenny has not been feeling her best for a while, however, she is slowly getting back to her old self.  She has been coming in with a smile and her usual announcement of “Jenny’s here!”  It can be heard all over the building and it brings an instant smile to your heart.  Jenny’s BrightStone favorites include working in the paint room, going to the library, doing math sheets, playing ball at the YMCA and peanut butter and banana sandwiches are her favorite BrightStone lunch.

Allen was thrilled to be Star of the Week.  When his name was called, he walked up to the front of the room pointing to himself and said, “Me-me” with a joyous smile on his face!  In Allen’s leisure time he enjoys listening to rock and roll music, eating at Chick-Fil-A, shopping and watching The Dukes of Hazard.  While at BrightStone he enjoys working in mixes, bowling, yoga class and worksheets in the learning lab.

STARS of the Week–Barbra and Jennifer

Barbra is a great friend to everyone at BrightStone. He is easygoing and always has a beautiful smile. In her leisure time Barbra enjoys playing with her dog, listening to Lee Rose and The Praise Pickers, and eating at Taco Bell. While at BrightStone she enjoys working in consumables, bowling and helping cook lunch.

Jennifer loves people and socializing. She is not shy and will gladly introduce herself to new people. Jennifer has a part time job at Harris Teeter and has an opportunity to greet many people, which is the perfect job

BrightStone Celebrates National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

BrightStone will celebrate National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month by hosting a variety of activities during the month of March.

To acquaint people with our mission and vision. BrightStone will host an Open House on Wednesday, March 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. “Many people in our community have participated in or attended our events, and/or supported others who have. We hope that all will come by our Open House on March 13 to visit, and see firsthand the impact that their support has had on the adults that we serve, adults who face each day with the challenges of developmental disabilities. And, we hope that they can join us for a meal with one of our GiveBack partners!” exclaimed Brenda Hauk, Executive Director.

In addition, a number of restaurants in the local community have partnered with BrightStone to “GiveBack” by hosting days/times in which a percentage of the proceeds from diners will benefit BrightStone. All funds received from these nights will be attributed to our “Enhance the Chance” Scholarship fund. This fund provides for adults, who cannot otherwise attend BrightStone, to experience opportunities for continued education, job skills training, productive work, life skills training and community service—with love and respect.

Partnering restaurants, with dates and times, are listed below.

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan declared March as National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with developmental disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives. BrightStone has been celebrating the ABILITIES of adults with special needs for over twelve years.

BrightStone started with only four adult students, volunteer staff, and donated space, and has now grown to serve 35 adults, with a paid staff of 20, in our own 9,000+ square foot building, complete with a teaching kitchen and a learning lab. BrightStone offers a variety of opportunities for job training and life skills education, as well as a health and wellness program, music program and community outings. BrightStone’s vision is to expand, both in numbers served and in the programs provided, and especially to incorporate residential services for adults who live each day with developmental disabilities.

BrightStone’s mission is to provide a comprehensive work, social support, and future residential community for adults with special needs, expanding their potential and helping them develop mentally, physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.
